Thursday evening, June 19th, Mrs. Virginia Stephens, wife of John Stephens passed away at her home, 116 East Ninth street, Joplin, Mo., after a long illness.
Mrs. Stephens was born in Bates county, Ill., in the year of 1855. At the age of 7 years she migrated with her parents to Bates county, Mo., near Prairie City. She was united in Marriage to J. S. Shaw, a lawyer by profession in 1870. To this happy union were born five children, fours sons, one son and a daughter surviving: George Shaw of 1512 Corning avenue, this city, and Mrs. J. A. Endicott, formerly of this city but now residing at Joplin. Her beloved husband passed away at their home in Prairie City, in the year 1880. In 1896 she was again united in the holy bonds of matrimony to John Stephens of St. Paul, Kan., who still survives. An aged mother, Mrs. Marie Carr of Lewiston, Idaho and brother and sister, Charles Carr and Mrs. Phoebe Drumm of the same place, a husband, John Stephens of Joplin and George Shaw of this city, daughter and son and Mr. Will Brooks and Mrs. Frank Wilmar, Grandchildren are left to mourn their loss. Five generations of this noble woman are still surviving . . . Funersl services were held at St. Patrick's church at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, conducted by Father Neuseus, after which the remains were laid to rest in Calvary cemetery.
Virginia is the daughter of Maria Morrison Cadwell and John Chapman. Virginia assumed the surname Cadwell following the divorce of her parents.
