LCDR Allen received his Naval Aviator designation at NAS Corpus Christi and reported for sea duty with the Bombing Squadron Three (later Attack Squadron 35). Later in Pensacola, he was attached to Attack Squadron Fifteen as operations officer. Deployed several times on various carriers. Landings abord, the Solomon, Leyte, Wasp, Kears-arge, Randolph, Roosevelt, Midway and Coral Sea. Final duty was abord the Westpac with Task Force 77.
