Continuing his service on the front line he was a broadcaster on the Armed Forces network (AFN) Yongsan, Korea Headquarters, programming to the warriors on the Pusan perimeter. Many Marines returned home to their loved ones with purple hearts because of Tom's medical attention. "So this is the real hero", commented a marine escort at a purple heart ceremony 50 years later. His award winning competitive spirit was evident in his senior softball traveling teams, coaching, umpiring, broadcasting local high school, college and professional games.
