He was married to Sarah Marie Christopher.

Printed in the Defiance Democrat (Defiance, Ohio) on August 17, 1882 - "Killed by Cars: S.L. Korns Esq. was instantly killed last Saturday evening by...evening train west on the Wabash. Mr. Korns lived near the coal chutes, and got on board of the train at the depot, intending to ride as far as the B . & O. junction and walk back home. As the train passed the chutes, Mr. Korns decided to jump off. He was advised to remain on the train, but persisted, and jumped to his death. He struck a small rise of ground near the track and rolled back upon the track. The cars passed over his head, smashing it out of all resemblance to a human head. His arms were also badly mangled. Death was instantaneous. The body was soon discovered and was removed to the residence of his brother-in-law, David Atkinson Esq. The funeral was held on Tuesday. Mr. Korns was a hard working man. He leaves a wife and five small children to mourn his loss. It is a terrible blow to them. He formerly lived in Holmes county, this state, where he had many relatives.
