Lorena Ruth Hawkins, is the first born child of Marguerite and John Hawkins. Lorena was born on Monday, October 24, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois. Lorena grew up in the Woodlawn community. Lorena attended McCosh Elementary School and graduated from Lucy Flowers High School. She subsequently received an academic scholarship to college, but instead chose to stay home and work in the defense industry at GE during World War II. Lorena had the following children; Ralph, Madelynne, Edward, and Joseph. She spent many years working for the Chicago Board of Health as a licensed nurse, after which she joined Community Care Systems, Inc. While there Lorena received a multitude of awards, commendations, and promotions, retiring as the Area Administrator at the Agee of 80. Lorena, is married to her loving husband Peter Vinegar.
