William H. Smith was born on Wednesday, January 26, 1898, in Bayou Sara, Louisiana, to Alice and Richard Smith. William was the youngest of eleven children born to Alice and Richard Smith. William received his education in New Orleans Public Schools. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in France during World War I. After his enlistment in the Army ended he moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1920. There he met and married Viola Vooinies, to this union two children were born; Anthony William and Ernestine. William was a kind, sympathetic father and a loving husband.

William lived a quiet and peaceful life. He was patient during his trials and tribulations, He never forgot His God. William's last words to his sister were "I am ready to go, I have surrendered all to Jesus, not my will but thine be done." William died on Monday, April 15, 1946. William is buried at Lincoln Cemetery, a cemetery established for African Americans, with his mother and sisters.
