My mother would always read a story to me of a little girl who got a pony for Christmas. I loved that story and wished that would happen to me one day. Four years later I was working on a horse farm. The owners called me to work on Christmas Eve and took me out to the yearling (horses a year old) pasture. They pointed to Bear and said, "He's your gift from us to you." I couldn't believe it, he was the most beautiful horse I'd ever seen and he was mine on Christmas! He was born of a wild paint mare and their best Palomino stallion with a great bloodline. I never knew why they gave me him because he was worth a lot of money. My mom told me after Bear passed away that the people I worked for said that God had told them to give me Bear. Knowing that makes it all that the more special for me, because I prayed so hard for a horse. Bear was the sweetest horse a girl could ever wish for. Gentle, loving, and trusting. He loved to roll in the dirt after a bath and LOVED his sugar cubes!

I had Bear for 16 years and on his 17th birthday I had to let him go. He developed COPD and lost a lot of weight and was wasting away. I couldn't let him suffer that way so I had to say goodbye. I love my Bear Boy and miss him so, but it was the right thing to do. My husband said when Bear passed he felt a hand on his shoulder and a voice telling him he was alright and it will be ok. I know that was the Holy Spirit.

Everyone says that I'll ride him again in Heaven and I always respond, "Bear doesn't get ridden in his Heaven, he just eats sugar cubes and gets fat!" I whistled to him every time I went to his pasture and he would come to me every time. Sometimes he came running. I will whistle to him in Heaven I pray he comes running. One sweet day God willing.

The Rainbow Bridge Poem:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
