Alfred Joseph Haviland MRCS, was born in Bridgewater in Somerset in 1824 the son of James Haviland and his wife Harriet Cobley (nee Haydon)

Alfred was a surgeon and in 1855 wrote ‘Climate, weather and disease being a sketch of the opinions of the most celebrated ancient and modern writers’. His abiding interest was in how where a person lives and the circumstances in which they lived could affect their health. His book, which he had worked on for many years includes maps and graphs showing the results of his research. It is entitled ‘The Geographical Distribution of Disease in Great Britain’ and was published in 1892.

Alfred married Mary Ann ‘Amy’ Pain on the 5th of August 1856 in Battersea. They moved to Bridgewater where he had a GP surgery and where their two children were born. A daughter Louisa in 1857 and a son Charles in 1859.
In 1871 they were living in Hampstead where Alfred was working as a surgeon and ten years later, with his son Charles he was living in Northamptonshire where he was Medical Officer of Health for the region. His son was assisting him here.

In 1896 when Joseph retired they moved to Frimley Green where they had some of the land owned by his father-in-law. Today this constitutes much of Lake Road, Bellew Road and as far as the lower half of the Frimley Green Recreation Ground.

The house they built for themselves was Ridgemount, but they also owned properties including others in Bellew Road.

Here Alfred died on the 30th of May 1903 aged 79. He was buried at St Peter’s on the 3rd of June 1903.
