SUNDERLAND -- Kenneth Joseph Hall, 80, a lifelong resident of Sunderland, died Saturday evening, Jan. 22, 2005, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, where he had been a resident since 2001.
Known as "Joe," he was born at the family homestead in Sunderland on March 1, 1924, the son of Winfield and Mary (McCurdy) Hall. He attended the one-room schools in Sunderland, completing the eighth grade.
Having survived a childhood fire at the age of 11, tuberculosis, and the loss of one lung from lung cancer in 1969, he had lived a simple, iron-willed life. He had always lived on (what was known to locals as Hall's Hill) the family homestead. Then, after the death of his mother in 1963, he lived with his brother and sister-in-law, Clifton and Clara Hall, and their children Melinda (Susie), Marion and Mark. He had always thought of them as his immediate family.
Having worked as a woodworker at Hale Company most of his life, he retired in 1994, when the company closed. He could often be found at home walking Hall's Hill, the Cross Road (now Laver Road), "Out Back," the fields, woods or at his friends, the Ennises. For four years, he had lived with his niece and nephew-in-law, Susie and Kevin Walsh, and their children on Red Mountain Road in Arlington. He enjoyed the family, doing chores outside, being helpful, exploring the outdoors of Red Mountain, relaxing and reading.
He loved to reminisce, tell stories, reading about history, especially about Sunderland, working in general, the outdoors, walking, spending time with his family, "a drink now and then," smoke cigs, helping others at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, sunshine and a good day.
He is survived by his brother, Clifton Hall of Sunderland; his niece and nephew-in-law, Susie and Kevin Walsh of Arlington; great nieces, Kerry Wilkins and family of Sunderland, Errin Pickering and family of Arlington and Kelli Walsh of Arlington; his niece, Marion Hall of Bennington; his daughter, Mary Jane Scott of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; his grandson, Kenneth Joseph Scott of Edison, N.J.; 10 nieces; three nephews and several great and great-great nieces, nephews and cousins; and his friends at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Anna Avery and Katherine Martin; his brothers Kermit, Winfield, Dan and Texas Hall; his sister-in-law Clara; his nephews Mark and Kevin Hall; his niece Jennie Bishop; two stepsisters; and lifelong friend Don Ennis.
At the request of the family, funeral services and interment will be private.
