David Allen Showman Sr. was born January 27, 1936 in Sigourney, IA to Brady and Mable Ryder Showman. His early years were spent in Sigourney where he attended Sigourney High School. Shortly after, David entered the United States Army where he proudly served his country for twenty-two years until his retirement as a Sergeant First Class. During his time in the service, David married Helen Bader and to this union six children were born. They later divorced, and in 1973 David married Helen Carnes. The two began their journey together as husband and wife in Gadston, AL. David worked at Ottumwa Heights Community College and most recently at Sunnyslope Care Center until his retirement in 1995.

David enjoyed anything that involved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, skilled fisherman, and always new where to find the mushrooms. When he couldn’t be outside, he enjoyed a good game of checkers. He was known for the meals he cooked for the family around the holidays which could have fed everyone in town. David loved people and telling a good story. He will be missed by his family and the many friends he made along the way.

David was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Helen Showman; two sisters, Mary Showman and Dorothy Jacobs, as well as one brother, Danny Showman.

Left to share his story are his children, Katharina (Michael) Kauffman of Marion, IA, Donna Showman Smith of Waterloo, IA, Susan Showman of Eldon, IA, David Jr. (Julie) Showman of Eldon, IA, Lisa (Eric) Walker of Cedar Rapids, IA, Effie Showman of Ottumwa, IA, and Christopher (Tabitha) Molyneux of West Union, IA; twenty grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren; five siblings, Mildred Hartson, Virginia Glick, Donald (Sharon) Showman, Connie (Gary) Messerschmitt, and Thomas (Kathy) Showman, as well as many extended family and friends.
