Ervin was born July 21, 1908, in Ward County, where he was raised and educated. He married Mae Harlieb Nov. 25, 1931, at Sawyer. They lived near the family farm and later took over the farm. In 1942, the moved to Minot, where he worked for Peterson and Putz Excavating until his retirement in 1972. Mrs. Klimpel died in 1972. He married Carmella Carlson Aug. 6. 1973. She died in 1989.

He is survived by three daughters, Gloria Lenten, Norwich, Audrey Beck, Burlington, and Deborah Denkinger, Fairbault, Minn.; and three sons, Gerald, LaVern and Dennis, all of Minot; two stepdaughters, Ardis Olsen, Albany, Ga., and Nancy Bursau, Burlington; two stepsons, Charles Carlson, Bottineau, and Ronald Carlson, Minnetonka, Minn.; two sisters, Lilly Hartleib, Sawyer, and Irene lade, Minot.
