Elmore (Elmo) Baynes was the oldest child of Charles Elmore Baynes and Hattie Wolfe. He joined the military at a young age, and he passed away on August 24, 1925 (at the age of 17), due to a military accident at Camp Grant in Rockford, IL. The Eighth Infantry unit (part of the Colored National Guard) was doing a demonstration of a canon called a Howitzer when it exploded during the drill. At least 8 African American soldiers were killed, including Elmo.
Elmo was buried at Lincoln Cemetery on Aug 30, 1925.
