BAHR (Gates), Shirley J. "Shirl" Age 82, of Butler Township, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018 at . She was born October 17, 1935 in Xenia, Ohio. She graduated from Butler High School in 1954 and married the love of her life, Bill, in 1958. Shirl retired from the Ohio Industries for the Handicapped in Columbus, Ohio in 1989 and returned to Dayton to help raise her grandchild, Justin. She volunteered at Murlin Heights Elementary and Smith Middle School. Shirl loved working with the children and they loved her as well, often calling her "grandma." She was a member of the Red Hats Society and loved to go out to their luncheons. Shirl was a member of Stillwater United Methodist Church and enjoyed watching television and playing with her miniature schnauzer, Grace Ann. Shirl was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William C. Bahr, her son, William A. Bahr, her parents, George and Jane (Tracy) Gates, and her sister, Gloria (Gates) Gridley. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Bahr, her grandson and his wife, Justin and Lindsey Bahr, and her great-grandchild, Lily. Shirl was a loving, caring person who would give the shirt off her back. Shirl and her daughter were inseparable and the best of friends. While her last few years of life were marked with multiple health issues, her daughter was by her side the entire time, including when she passed. She will be dearly missed by many. Shirl's wish was to donate her body to the Wright State Anatomical Gift Program to benefit educational and scientific purposes. A celebration of life will be held in her honor on Saturday, July 7th, 2018, from 11:30am 2pm at Marion's Piazza, 3443 N Dixie Dr, Dayton, OH 45414.
