Eldest child of farmer turned minister, William A. Anthony and his wife Sarah Echols Anthony of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Homer L. Anthony received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1851. He and his father, William, moved from Virginia to Mississippi shortly after the death of both Homer’s first wife, his cousin Morgiana, and William’s wife (and Homer’s mother), Sarah in 1853. William settled in Marshall County, Mississippi. Homer met and married Margaret B. Tucker in DeSoto County, Mississippi on December 19, 1854. Unfortunately “Maggie” died in 1857, and their son, “Little Willie” Anthony would die on the day of his birth, July 17, 1855. Homer would go on to marry Mary E. Bowdre in December 1869 at DeSoto County, Mississippi. They had two children, Bowdre and Mary Emmil Anthony, both of whom would die as children after their father began to practice medicine in Ashley County, Arkansas. Homer would go on to marry two more women in Ashley County, Arkansas who would precede him in death: Martha Anderson (Tebbs) and Augusta C. Shelton. Augusta died in 1904, only one year before Homer attended the Baptist World Conference in London, England. It was while at this conference that Dr. Homer L. Anthony was accidentally killed. He died at Kings College Hospital in London and was buried at the Kendal Green Cemetery, one of the most prestigious and historic cemeteries in the United Kingdom.
