Pasadenan Marks 99th Anniversary
Mary Amanda Muir is celebrating her 99th birthday today at her home at 373 N. El Molino Ave. She and her husband built it 42 years ago.
"I never expected to live to the last year of the century mark," she confessed. "But now that I have, I certainly don't feel old."
The bright-eyes little nonagenarian doesn't look old, either, and, except for a hearing defect, is in excellent health, alert, active, and very much interested in everything going on.
According to her daughter, retired college professor, Dr. Gladys Muir, she still does a lot of her own housekeeping and continues a life-long love of working in her garden.
Widowed since the death of her husband, Freeman Muir, who was a retired music teacher when they settled in Pasadena, she has lived quietly taking little part in activities outside of her home and church. She rarely misses a Sunday service at the Church of the Brethren, where her husband had helped with the music and she was once active in the Ladies' Aid.
Mrs. Muir was born near Ashland, Ohio, on property staked out as a Northwest Territory claim by her father, the deed signed by James Madison, President. She left the ancestral home as a bride to live in Kansas with her husband, the late Prof. Freeman G. Muir near his post at McPherson College. She is the only surviving member of a family of 12 children.
Today's celebrations include a small family luncheon, the guests, a nephew, Carlos Mishler of Altadena, and a niece, Ruth Dowling of Beverly Hills, and their families, and an open house this afternoon for a few close friends, after which Mary Amanda Muir will serenely look forward to the coming year.
"If one outstanding trait would be considered a contributing factor, it would be mother's continual serenity," her daughter said. "I've never seen her fussed."
