Eli was the son of Henry and Harriet Porter Gasque.

He was married in Mississippi to Sallie Shaw, the daughter of Merdock Shaw from Marion County. They had ten children.

In May 1861, he became a private in the Eighth Mississippi Regiment, later he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He was in most of the campaigns under Bragg, Hood and Johnston and was wounded twice.

Henry was in the mercantile business and for many years was one of the leaders in business and public affairs. He was alderman and mayor of Marion, an official in the Methodist Church and was past high priest of Marion Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, past master of Clinton Lodge No. 60, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and became grand high priest in the Grand Chapter of the state.

He married again in 1883 to twenty-five year old Sarah Jane Foxworth. They had four children together.

The following is an extract from The Marion Star Newspaper: May 14, 1884

"A son was born to Mr. E.H. GASQUE yesterday. #12, 13, 14 or 15 of old Series and #1 of new series. [The first Mrs. E. H. Gasque died Jan. 9, 1883. He remarried to Sallie Foxworth in July of 1883.]"
