Ralph "Butch" O. Ertl, 84 of Watertown, died Tuesday Jan. 31, 2006, at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.
Ralph was born April 29, 1921, in the town of Emmet, son of Adolph and Helen (Meitner) Ertl. He attended St. Henry's grade school and was a 1940 graduate of Watertown High School.
Ralph served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1944 and later married Bernice Kottmann on Sept. 1, 1945, in the parsonage at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watertown.
Ralph worked at Mid-State Shoe company for 32 years and also worked at Sealy Mattress Company Watertown. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watertown, Watertown American Legion Post 189, Watertown Country Club and AARP.
He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling and loved to work with wood, making furniture and utilitarian projects for his family. He enjoyed fixing things, even things that weren't really broken and had a great time with his granddaughters and great-grandchildren whenever they were together.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Ertl of Watertown; a daughter, Cherie Reed of Fort Atkinson; his granddaughters, Shannon Reed of Sheboygan and Tamara (Michael) Hoehn of Denver, Colo.; his great-grandchildren, Cameron, Connor and Claire; also a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Jim Reed; a sister, Agnes Kreuziger; and three brothers, Henry, William and George.
The family would appreciate memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watertown.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Pederson Funeral Home Watertown with the Rev. Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call to pay their respects on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
