ALVA N. (PAPPY) GREGG
Obit from Creighton Banner, dated Dec 16 1965.
Alva Nelson Gregg, son of Didd and Alice Lane Gregg, was born near Creighton, Mo. Dec 13 1882 and departed this life after a long illness on December 8 1965, at the Town and Country Nursing Home in Clinton Mo at the age of 82 years 11 months and 26 days.
On Dec 14 1899 he married Minnie O'dell Nichols. To this union three children were born - two daughters and one son. The older daughter, Mrs. Thelma Elliott, passed away on Dec. 4, 1952. Three years later, July 4, 1952, his wife passed away after a long illness.
In their early married life he and his wife joined the Christian church and were baptised by the Rev. E. I. Armstrong, who was pastor here for several years.
"Pappy", as he was named by his grandchildren and it became his name to all his friends too, was loved and respected in the community and was greatly missed when his health kept him at home.
He loved his grandchildren very dearly and spent two winters in California with them. He was always happiest when he could have his family together.
Three years ago his health failed and he could no longer live alone. He moved to the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Heller, where he was faithfully cared for by her sister-in-law and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Douglas, who resided there for two years.
He was deeply devoted to his sister, Mrs. Nellie Nichols, who survives, and they spent many happy hours together, by whom he will be sadly missed.
He will also be sadly missed by his daughter, Mrs. George (Neita) Heller, Creighton Mo, his son, Darwin Gregg, Deepwater Mo, his grandchildren, Jerry Elliott, Sacramento CA, Joe Edd, Heller, Yuba City Ca, and Mrs. Evonne Bishop, Dallas TX; and 10 great grandchildren who loved "Pappy" very dearly.
He loved the young people of the community and will be missed by them, by his nieces and nephews and by a host of friends.
The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. John R. Harvey at the First Christian church of Creighton, Saturday afternoon, Dec 11. "Beautiful Isle" and "Whispering Hope" were rendered by Mrs. Leonard Salmon, Mrs. Lillie Sites, Mrs. Hazel Sites and Mrs. Edith Scharfenberg, singers and Mrs Elsie Birch, pianist.
Casket bearers were: Jack Stewart, Kenneth Gregg, George T. Ryberg, Charles Lindsay, Garnett Salmon, Leonard Gibson, Dale Crawford and Gene Chandler.
Burial was made in the Parker cemetery, southwest of Creighton under the direction of Snow's Funeral Home of Urich.
