Walter was the son of Lewis and Mary Ann Elmer (nee Wickersham). He was 6 or 7 years old when his family moved from Pittsburgh PA to Baltimore MD. His father was a vinegar and yeast manufacturer in Baltimore from 1852-1882. Walter and his siblings inherited the business and managed it until 1907. In the 1907 Baltimore city directory, Walter is listed as secretary, treasurer of Lewis Elmer and Sons, Inc, manufacturers of cider, vinegar and compressed yeast at the southwest corner of Central Ave and Bank St. His older brother William S and younger brother George H served as president and vice president, respectively. Following the death of his infant grandson Mason Elmer on 9 Feb 1907, Walter sold his interest in the business to his brothers. A few months later they sold the business to the Fleischmann Yeast Company.

First marriage and children:

She died giving birth to their only child, Helen E Hayden (1899-1930). Frank C was less than a month old when he died. Charles W was attending college at MIT in Cambridge MA when his mother died. He met his future wife, Mae Everts Mason, at MIT. They married on 16 Apr 1906 in Cambridge MA and had two children: Mason (1907-1907) born in Baltimore MD, and Virginia (1910-?) born in Newton MA. Folliwng the wedding, Charles and Mae lived briefly with Walter. They moved to Newton MA shortly after Mason's death. Walter, now retired, also moved after his grandson's death to 1621 Edmondson Ave in Baltimore where he lived until he moved in with the family of his brother George in late 1909 or early 1910. He remained with them for 5+ years.
