TUSCALOOSA - Rev. John R. Caine, age 87, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., departed this life to be with the King of Glory on February 8, 2018.
John was born May 28, 1930 and was raised on a farm in Guilford County, N.C., along with eleven siblings. John served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Answering a call to the ministry, he attended People's Bible College in Greensboro, N.C. For a few years, John served as a part-time minister, including street ministry and prison ministry, while at the same time building a home repair business.
In 1965, John entered the ministry full time and moved his family to Aliquippa, Pa. to minister to a church there. While serving as a minister, John provided for his family by working as a carpenter, a skill he learned from his father.
In 1972, John relocated to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to minister to the Bible Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa. He served there until 1982, then ministered at other churches in Alabama and North Carolina before retiring and moving back to Tuscaloosa in 1999.
Before and after retirement, John regularly visited with friends and acquaintances in the community, including regular meetings with patients at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. He enjoyed entertaining and encouraging his friends and acquaintances by sharing stories of his life experiences, teaching from the Bible and by playing familiar tunes on his harmonica. For a stretch of several years, John kept occupied by memorizing many passages of scripture.
John was a man of varied interests and pursuits. Over the years he tried his hand at beekeeping, barbering, poultry farming, training horses, practicing as an arborist and organic gardener. With boundless energy and determination, John was an early riser and was described by a friend as one who, "never sits all the way down in his chair". He was creative and was constantly making tools, gadgets and inventions to make life more pleasant. He was an avid recycler well before recycling became popular.
His father was deaf and mute. John, along with his siblings, was an interpreter for his father during his childhood. He often quoted one of his mother's favorite expressions, "where there's a will, there's a way".
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Banks Caine of Tuscaloosa; daughter, Joan Stetler of Hobe Sound, Fla., son Mark Caine of Williamsburg, Va., daughter, Angela Reis of Dallas, Texas; as well as eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his brother, Donald Caine of Greensboro, N.C. and Margaret's children, Allen Banks, Tommy Banks, Joy Alexander and Terry Mydock.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Abbie Cain; his siblings, Dorothy, Dale, Edith, Lois, Ruth, Norma, Marlene, Ernest, JoAnne and David; his first wife, Sarah and his second wife, Lucy.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, 2200 Skyland Blvd East, Tuscaloosa, AL 35405. Interment will be at a later date at the Ai Methodist Memorial Cemetery in Oak Ridge, N.C.
