Jimmy J. Short, 86, of Troutville, VA., died on Friday, April 20, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Esther Forga Short; a brother, Thomas Gerald Short; and two sisters, Sue Davis and Barbara Stanley.

Jimmy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris Riley Short; sons, James Short (Bonnie), Ron Short, Mike Short (Rachel) and Steve Short; sisters, Linda Wood, Charlotte Stiles (Eddie) and Teresa Stovall (Jerry); two brothers-in-law, Clark Riley and Harold Riley (Dotty); eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello and retired from the U S Forest Service. He was a former Deputy Supervisor of the Jefferson National Forest in Roanoke, and Center Director of Flatwoods Job Corps in Wise County, VA. Jimmy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Army National Guard. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

The family would like to thank Our Lady of the Valley and Carrington Cottages Memory Care for their care and friendship.

Memorials may be made to charity of choice.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with Pastoral Counselor, Drew Purcell officiating. Military Honors will be presented by the US Navy. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
