Helena Recruiting Station Enlists 14 Lewis and Clark Men For Army Duty During October

October the following with men enlisted or re-enlisted at the regular army under the sergeant. new "guardian of victory" program sponsored by the U. S. army recruiting service, Capt. John E. Ancell, director of the Helena recruiting district, said today.

Wilbur J. Bartell, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur G. Bartell of 914 Cannon, enlisted with the ordnance for Pacific duty.

Two Helena men now serving with the regular army are stationed in Japan. TFC Robert D. Cummings is stationed with the 11th airborne division in Sendia, Japan. PFC Wilbur Bartell is serving with the motor battalion at General MacArthur's headquarters in Tokyo.

Wilbur H. Bartell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur G. Bartell, 914 Cannon, returned recently from a two-week cruise aboard the navy destroyer McKcan. Bartell, who is serving with occupation forces in Japan, was one of 20 army enlisted men and five of fleeter's who were guest of the navy on the 2.500-mile cruise of Pacific waters.

Word from Tokyo reports that Sgt. Wilbur J. Bartell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur G. Bartell, 914 Cannon, has been awarded the good conduct medal. Currently stationed with a car company at headquarters of the Far East command in Tokyo, Sergeant Bartell has been In the army since October, 1945, and has been in Japan since July, 1946.

Helena Man Married In Kentucky Ceremony Recently
Miss Virginia Darnell, daughter of Forest Darnell and Mrs. Stella Zimmerman of West Union, Ohio, and M/Sgt. Wilbur J. Bartell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Bartell of 914 Cannon, were married recently in Maysville, Ky.

For her marriage the bride chose a gown of Chantilly lace over baby blue satin with fitted bodice, a high neckline and round collar. Her fingertip veil fell from a cap of pearls small bouquet of white roses and belonged to her mother.

Mrs. Bert Davis, aunt of the bride, was matron of honor, wearing a navy blue suit with blue accessories and carrying a bouquet of pink roses.

A reception at the home of the bride's mother followed the ceremony. Shortly after the reception, Ga., where the bridegroom will be stationed.

The bride attended school in Ohio and was employed by the government in occupied Japan. The bridegroom, who attended Helena schools, joined the army in 1945. He was stationed at general headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, for five years.

Wilbur Bartell has witnessed amazing rural growth in the East Helena area. Friday he retired as postmaster of that community, once strictly a smelter town but now a hub of subdivision activity, and was presented a cake decorated like a parcel. Bartell said that when he became postmaster In 1971 East Helena had only 400 to 500 post office boxes.

Now there are 970 plus a "star route" for another 721 homes In outlying areas. "I like the community and people real well, " Bartell said. "My personal feeling is I couldn't have served In a better town." He began his career with the Postal Service as a window clerk in Helena, a job he held for 23 years. (Staff photo by George Lane)

Wilbur Joseph Bartell was born in Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana on March 16th 1928 to parents, Adeline Mary Latimer and Wilbur Ginter Bartell. He attended Helena High School and joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and served in Tokyo, Japan, for five years. He retired as postmaster of East Helena after 23 years of service. Following retirement, Wilbur & his wife moved to Mesa, Arizona.

Wilbur J. Bartell marred Virginia June Darnell in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky on 31 Dec 1951.

Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents and his devoted wife, Virginia June (Darnell) Bartell in 1990.
Survivors include his son and daughter in-law, Naperville, Illinois, sister & brother in- law, Evelyn Mae (Bartell) & Lyle L. Boehler, Fort Collins, Larimer County, Colorado, 4 nieces and one grandson.
