A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Herm will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday June 6, 2017 at New Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Gay officiating. Burial to follow.

Major League Baseball Player, Coach. Born Herman Paul Starrette, he attended Cool Springs High School in North Carolina, where he played baseball. After receiving an athletic scholarship, he played collegiate baseball and Lenoir-Rhyne College. Signed by the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1958, he made his Major League debut on July 1, 1963 and pitched in 18 games that year. He would pitch in parts of three seasons (1963 to 1965) from out of the Orioles' bullpen and compile a 1 win, 1 loss record, with a lifetime 2.54 ERA, in 46 innings-pitched. After retiring as a player, he began a lengthy career as a coach, initially in the Minor Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles' organization. He returned to the Major League level as a coach with the Atlanta Braves (1974 to 1976), followed by stints with the San Francisco Giants (1977 to 1978, 1983 to 1984), Philadelphia Phillies (1979 to 1981), Milwaukee Brewers (1985 to 1986), Chicago Cubs (1987) and a return to the Baltimore Orioles in 1988. Additionally, he had two separate stints with the Boston Red Sox (1995 and 1997). Starrette was pitching coach with the Philadelphia Phillies' team of which captured the 1980 World Championship.
