Thomas Warren Mills, resident of Watts, Okla., died Tuesday morning, April 9, 2019 at his home. He was 84.
The son of Ira Mills and Alma Dorothy (Maze) Mills, Tom was born Nov. 7, 1934 in Lyman, Okla. His early years were spent in Webb City where he attended grade school. Later the family moved to Shidler and he attended Shidler High School and graduated with the class of 1952. He then attended a year at Oklahoma State University.
On June 22, 1953 Tom and Lillian LaVerne McGee were married in Ponca City. They established their first home in Shidler.
Tom’s work history began with employment with Coon Construction in the oilfields. In 1960 he moved to Winfield, Iowa to work as a farm laborer. After four years he moved to Kansas, to the Galesburg and Erie area. There he worked in farming and driving a feed truck for the feed elevator. In 1967 he moved to Watts and worked for Farmers Produce Store for seven years. He then was employed as supervisor for Baldor Electric, and later he worked for Brand Rex Telephone Cable. Not quite through working, he was employed with Allen’s Canning Company and several other jobs before retiring to the farm at Watts.
Tom and Lillian were member of Lightning Ridge Community Church in Watts. He was also a member of the Pony of the Americas Club. He enjoyed auctions, eating out, coin collecting and taking his grandkids to horse shows. Most of all, he cherished his family, from his wife down to the smallest great-grandchild.
Tom is survived by Lillian, his wife of over 65 years; his children, Thomas Mills, Jr. of Tahlequah, Angelique Hardbarger, and Gisele Nance, both of Watts; his siblings, Dorothy Monsrud of Salol, Minn., Gerald Dean Mills of Grove, and Clifford Mills of Ponca City; two great-aunts; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Lloyd Michael Mills; his parents; an baby sister, Bonnie Sue, four brothers, Donald Ira, Darrell Gene, Lonnie Lou and Jackie Paul Mills; a brother-in-law, Richard Monsrud; a sister-in-law, Cecila Mills;and a grandson-in-law, Glenn Everett.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, April 15 in Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Susan Rice, minister of the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Kaw City. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. The casket will be open for viewing Monday, the day of the service only.
Those serving as casket bearers will be Tom Harper, Josh Percival, Glenn Everett, Alex Mills, Ryan Hosley and Sammy Harper.
The family will host a memorial service Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. at the Lightning Ridge Community Church in Watts with the Rev. Jim Beavers officiating. Following the service there will be a pot luck meal and time for visiting until 5 p.m.
