Charles McKinstry Nichols was born on 19 Dec 1861 in Crown Point, Essex County, New York, the son of physician, Dr. Thomas Brainard Nichols, Sr. and his Canadian-born wife, Mary Walbridge. In 1863, his father established a medical practice in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York. Charles, aged 24, graduated from Amherst College with the class of 1885.

At age 27, he married Mary Edwards on 5 Sep 1888 in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York. The newlyweds moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Charles became an expert stenographer and court reporter. In 1890 he accepted a position with the Village Real Estate and Loan Association of Chicago, and in 1892 was elected its secretary. After Charles and Mary divorced, Charles married Ada M., born in Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois, about 1908 in Chicago. Mary went on to marry the widower Arthur Elbert Chase and lived in Ohio.

Charles, aged 65, died on August 30, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois and was buried there in Rosehill Cemetery.
