My best friend, companion and husband completed his mortal life and returned to his Heavenly Father on June 10, 2006 after a long battle with heart problems.
Max Dwain Powell was born on February 2, 1929 in Delta, Colorado to Jay and Alice Huffman Powell. He married Shirley Button Chase that included her four children, Ray, Nial, Coral Lee, and Marie, on August 27, 1954 in Fredonia, Arizona. He served in WWII and the Korean conflict and was proud of his service to his country.
Max and Shirley spent many years together on the Navajo Indian Reservation, loving every minute of it. He worked in trading posts in Kayenta, Cedar Ridge, and Indian Well, Arizona. He also worked on the Glen Canyon Dan and for the Gilbert School District.
Max loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was member of the Ponderosa Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He held many callings in the church, including Branch President, on the reservation, teaching Sunday School to a room of teenagers, home teacher assistant to the High Priest Group Leader and Sunday School President.
Max leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Shirley: their children Ray and Sharon Chase of Casa Grande, Arizona, Nial and Darla Chase of Killeen, Texas, Coral Lee and David Prickett of Westminster, Colorado, Marie and Larry Behling of Madison, Alabama and a very special adopted daughter Toni Lua of Provo, Utah. 29 grandchildren and 73 great-grand kids; brothers Kenneth Powell of Provo, Utah Bruce and Delna Powell of Clint Wells, Arizona; sisters Phyllis Harper of Kanab, Utah and Myrna and Errol Brown (Buzz) of Clint Wells, Arizona: many nieces and nephews and a lot of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Jay and Alice Powell, Shirley's parents Ralph and Susie Button, his brother Gordon, and sister-in-law Betty Powell.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday June 14, at the Messinger Payson Funeral Home 302 W. Aero Drive. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM with Bishop David Cluff conducting the service.
A viewing will be held on Friday, June 16, 2006 from 2-2:45 PM (AZ time) at the Fredonia LDS Chapel, with graveside services to follow at 3 PM in the Fredonia Cemetery.
Arrangements made with Mosdell Mortuary.
