She came from a large family (15 children). In very early years endured the death of her father, then an abusive step-father and being 'married off' at 13 yrs old to an older man. She continued to attend school until the 8th grade. Naively she didn't fully understand how babies were made until she gave birth at 14-1/2, when indeed she was still a child herself.
She divorced and remarried, thus having had children ranging 22 yrs apart, from youngest to oldest. A reclusive alcoholic, she seldom left the house during the last 30 yrs of her life. She did quit drinking two years before she died, but smoked up until two days before death.
Hard headed, strict and at times mean-spirited, she demanded integrity and accountability, thus instilling valuable character assets in her children.
Your notes and flowers are a blessing.
Thank you!
