Born on April 3, 1929 at Blue Jay, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John William McQuade and Anna Mae Bostick McQuade.
Mrs. Brooks was a retired waitress of 42 years in many area restaurants including the Columbia Grill, Town and Country Restaurant for 20 years, and retired at the age of 72 at Bob Evans Restaurant in the Beckley Plaza.
She was a graduate in 1947 from St. Benedict High School in Highland, Michigan and was of the Catholic faith, and later chose to resolve to the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by her first husband, Emmett Gene McLaughlin whom she married in 1948, by her second husband, Melvin Lee Brooks Sr., whom she married in 1967, by two brothers, John and Joseph McQuade, by four sisters, Agnes Knapp, Mary Woolwine, Winefred McQuade, and Patricia Ammott, and by a grandson, Ronald Lee Bailey Jr.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Audra Spencer and her husband Larry of Poplar Camp, Virginia with whom she made her home and were her caregivers; her oldest daughter Jane Lawson, (and her late husband John Lawson) of Shady Spring; her oldest son, Michael McLaughlin and his wife Judith of Shady Spring, her youngest son, Melvin Lee Brooks Jr. of Beaver; two dear and special grandchildren whom she raised to be her own, Christon Audra and Eric Warden, both of Beaver. Her special dog whom she dearly loved, Travis Ray; two sisters, Joyce Ann Bennett and her husband Acil of Cambridge, Ohio, and Sherry Lee Basile and her husband Frank of Land-o-Lakes, Fla.; one dear brother, Jerry McQuade and his wife Edith of Ronceverte; four granddaughters, Teresa and her husband Tommy Newman, Paula and her husband Brian, Lisa and her husband Brian Larsen, and Tiffany Spencer; five grandsons, Ronald Bailey, Brian McLaughlin, Cody Tanner Brooks, Colten Lee Brooks, and Jimmy Spencer; four great granddaughters, Miranda Otis, Melonie Larsen, Allie Newman, and Kimber Lynn Bailey; four great grandsons, Tommy Newman, Jamie Newman, Tyler McLaughlin, and Ryan Bailey; two great-great grandsons, Eli and Max Newman; two special adopted grandsons, Joseph Yancey and Cody “Noony” Crist. Many nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends are also among her survivors.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with Rev. Tony Hodge of Hillsville, Va. officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.
