James Loughran Phillip CLARKE / James Loughran Phillip CLARK was a son of Johana "Jane" LOUGHRAN Clarke Quin / Quinn and Peter CLARKE. His baptismal record retains the E on his surname. It appears later in life, James dropped the letter E and went by surname variant CLARK.

His first middle name presumably seems to be Loughran based on priest abbreviation. The sponsors at his baptism were his uncle Stephen LOUGHRAN / LAUGHRIN and Bridget LAUGHRIN.

Please note, we're going by County Tyrone, Townland Meenascallagh, Cookstown, Parish of Kildress surname spelling on 2nd middle name Loughran. That is a family name consisting of his mother's maiden name (abbreviated as L.) We are spelling it as intended even though priest spelled his sponsors surnames on baptismal record as variant LAUGHRIN.

Presumably Father C.C. Brennan abbreviated the infant's name to "J.L. Phillip CLARKE" because there likely wasn't enough room in margin of baptismal register to record all of those names in cursive handwriting. Please see image made from diocese microfilm accessed from Arch Diocese of Baltimore 4 Oct 2021 from the Baptismal Register of St. Ignatius Catholic Church at Hickory.

James Laughrin Phillip CLARKE and on some records James H. CLARK, was born 2 May 1847, MD, USA, was a son of Peter Clarke / Clark, b: Ireland and Jane LOUGHRAN b: abt 1825, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

James was baptized in the oldest active Roman Catholic church within the Arch diocese of Baltimore, at St. Ignatius, located in Hickory, Harford County, MD. At the time of his birth, his father Peter CLARKE was employed as a fireman, working in the tender (where the fuel supply of the steam locomotive was kept -- either coal or wood) for the Baltimore and Susquehanna RR. At his baptism, his sponsors were: his uncle Stephen "LAUGHRIN" & Bridget "LAUGHRIN."

Jane LOUGHRAN/LAUGHRAN Clark Quin, Mother of James H. Clark, her Irish Origins and Relatives

On the death certificate for James Clark, his mother's maiden name is written as "Laugha"= Jane LAUGHRAN. Name variants include: LOUGHRAN, LOUGHRIN, LOUGHREN, LOUGHNAN, and others.

His mother Jane LOUGHRAN / Jane LAUGHRAN was a sister of Michael LAUGHRAN who appears as a sponsor along with Mary CLARKE (presumably a sister of her husband Peter CLARKE) at the 7 May 1845 baptism for his brother, Michael Thomas CLARKE. James Clark was a maternal grandson of Alexander LAUGHRAN. The family was of the Catholic faith.

James H. Clark's father Peter CLARKE predeceased his mother Jane LOUGHRAN. The widow Jane Loughran married Henry Quinn (Henry Quin) who was an engineer for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. According to Henry' Quinn's August 1863 civil war draft paperwork out of Westernport, MD, he was widowed by Jane. Since Jane appears in the 1860 Piedmont, Hampshire VA census with her family, Jane LOUGHRAN died sometime after the 1860 census and prior to August of 1863. See: US Civil War Draft Records,1863-1865, Henry Quinn, living in Westernport, MD, aged 32 , b: 1831- Ireland, White, Occupation: Railroad, Widower.

In Maryland Marriages, 1655-1850, we have a 'Peter Clarke' who maried 'Jane Saughran' = Jane Laughran on 17 May 1841, in Allegany County, MD.

According to an advertisement placed in The Boston Pilot , published 2 July 1853, under Looking for Lost Friends - Relatives, with many phonetically spelled & misspelled Irish place names, the sister of Michael Laughran who is living in Philadelphia seeks her brothers Michael and Stephen who lived during the 1840s in Maryland. Irish origins of James H. Clark's maternal grandfather Alexander Loughran and his mother Jane LAUGHRAN/LOUGHRAN: Townland of Meenascallagh, Barony: Dungannon, Upper, Civil Parish: Kildress, Poor Law Union: Crookstown, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

The Railroad and James Loughran Phillip Clark
James would have been surrounded by men in the railroad industry, some of whom, including his late father Peter CLARKE, died while working on the railroad. His 1860 childhood home was in Piedmont, (prior to the US Civil War , Piedmont was located in Hampshire Co. VA & after the war. Boundaries changed after the war and this town became: Piedmont, Mineral, WV). Piedmont was a small but important hub of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.

His step father, Henry Quin by the time of the US Civil war, had advanced from railroad hand in 1860 to railroad engineer for the B&O.

James H. Clark was a half brother to James Quinn of Latrobe. James Quinn was a contractor, a sinker of coal mines and his extensively researched Find a Grave Memorial can be accessed by clicking the preceding blue hyperlink .

James CLARK comes from a family who back in Ireland on his maternal LOUGHRAN family lines were active in the Catholic faith. There were notable priests and martyrs of surname LOUGHRAN. His Uncle, in the 1850s was a Roman Catholic priest in Philadelphia, PA. His half brother James QUINN was very active in the parish of Holy Family in Latrobe and its social and service organizations.

Prior to retirement, James H. Clark had been employed as an Engineer with the railroad.
