John Abbanat Memorial services will be Wednesday for John Abbanat of Santa Cruz, who died Friday in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was 95. A native of Palermo, Italy, Mr. Abbanat came to the United States at the age of 12, settling in Aurora, Minnesota. A veteran of World War I, Mr. Abbanat came to California in the late 1920s and worked as a barber in Sacramento for 50 years. He moved to Santa Cruz in 1978 and has been performing music for his fellow residents at the Casa Del Rey retirement home in Santa Cruz since then. He is survived by his brothers, Steve Abbanat of Capitola and Tony Abbanat of Ohio; his sisters, Florence Harsch and Josephine Robinson, both of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Norman's Family Chapel, 3620 Soquel Drive, So-quel. A private committal at sea will take place after cremation.
