Panda was the sweetest stray cat I’ve ever met. He was abandoned over five years ago when his owner moved away and left him behind. He spent weeks waiting in front his “home” for the owner to let him in. The new owners moved in and chased him off.

One day I heard a soft kitten cry from the woods behind my house. I couldn’t find where it was coming from. The next day I heard it again and saw a sweet stray cat hiding under a pine tree. I began to leave food and water near the tree. Every day he came closer and closer to me until he finally let me cuddle him and bring him into the garage. I later found out from the neighbors how he ended up alone and in terrible shape. He had been hit by a car and limped terribly on his right side, he was thin and full of parasites.

My male cat wouldn’t accept him in the house, but we worked it out. I couldn’t get him into a no kill shelter and ended up keeping him in a heated little cat house in the garage and he also had one on the front porch which he preferred. Finally, after FIVE years I was very lucky to get him taken in by a no kill facility and they were working with him to make him a house cat and then to find him a loving home. He passed the vet exam with flying colors (they decided his limp was best left alone) and was slowly being integrated into the cat room. This morning the shelter called to tell me he had a heart attack and died three days ago.

How unfair that this sweet cat was deserted by his owner, left to fend on his own, only to die just when we may have found his forever home.

You never saw anything sweeter than Panda rolling in the sunny lawn, he waited every morning on the front porch for his breakfast and just wanted me to cuddle and hold him. Rest in Peace little Panda.
