Maybeth Trimble

Sumter, SC - Maybeth Carithers Trimble, age 85, joined her beloved husband, Harry White Trimble, on Tuesday, October 5, 2004. She was surrounded by her family, who take comfort in the joy of life she possessed all her days and inspired in her children, family and friends.

Born May 10, 1919 in Athens, GA, Maybeth was the daughter of Herschel Carithers, Sr. and Ellen MacKenzie Carithers, and the sister of Harry Stevens and Herschel Carithers, Jr. She graduated from Athens High School in 1936 and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education at the University of Georgia in 1940. While at the university she was elected to the Z Club, an honor society for outstanding female students who excelled in scholarship, leadership, character, service and loyalty. She was also a member of the Hunt Club, the Epicurean Club, the Girls' Rifle Team and the Dolphin Club (known today as synchronized swimming) and was president of the Dance Club. As a blue ribbon equestrienne she represented the university in a number of horse shows.

In 1940, she studied dance under Martha Graham in New York. Following her college graduation she taught physical education in the Athens public schools and the Georgia State Teachers College in Statesboro, GA.

Maybeth married Harry in early 1942 and embraced her new role as wife of an Air Force Officer. She approached each new station in various locations as an opportunity to make friends and create yet another home for her growing family. Their children, Richard, Jack, and Jean were born between 1943 and 1951 and those early years were filled with her responsibilities as a wife and mother. As her children grew up, she also dedicated herself to over 30 years volunteer service in the American Red Cross. In the 1950's and 60's she was a hospital volunteer and organized blood drives. Later, after moving to Sumter, SC she became Chairman of Disaster Volunteers for the Carolina Division, during which time she participated in disaster relief following several natural emergencies in the southeast. She served as president of the board of the Sumter Chapter of the American Red Cross and represented the chapter as a delegate at national meetings. She was awarded the Clara Barton Medal, a national award that is the highest award given by a local Red Cross Chapter to a volunteer.

Throughout her life Maybeth enjoyed traveling the world, entertaining friends, and playing golf throughout the southeast. She was one of the few golfers who can claim an official hole-in-one. Maybeth and Harry were active members of the Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg. She was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew her and will be remembered for her graciousness, her sense of humor and her indomitable spirit.

Survivors are: Two sons, Jack Randolph Trimble and his wife, Rachel, of Memphis, TN and Richard Torgerson Trimble and his wife, Leslie, of Chama, NM; One daughter, Jean Trimble Bried and her husband, Michael, of Eastsound, WA; and four grandchildren, Norman Scott Trimble and his wife, Jennifer, Jennifer Lynn Trimble, Eric Bradley Trimble and Brittany Ann Trimble.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Herschel and Harry Stevens Carithers.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00pm, Saturday, October 9, 2004 at the Church of the Holy Cross with the Rev. Richard Archer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 8, 2004 from 6-9pm, at Bullock Funeral Home.
