(Excerpt) ...Max Walter Brummett is held prisoner by the Japanese at San Tonas [Santo Tomas], Philippines Islands. Brummett has been missing for a year. The young man is a quartermaster on the United States liner Marshall Foch [Maréchal Joffre] which was docked at Shanghai, China, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The boat was immediately taken over by the United States Navy and Brummett started with the ship on its return to the United States. Japanese overtook him when the boat stopped at Manila and he has since been a prisoner in the Philippines. Brummett's wife was with him at the time, but so far, her whereabouts have not been reported. Brummett is the son of Mrs. Grace Brummett, principal of Zeller School here.
