Edward Avery
Edward E. "Everett" Avery, 84, of Gladstone, Ill., died at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at Community Memorial Hospital in Monmouth, Ill.
Born May 28, 1913, in Stronghurst, Ill., he was the son of Joseph and Cynthia Waterman Avery. He married Ruth Oaks in Kahoka, Mo. She died March 13, 1993.
Mr. Avery was raised in Olena, Ill., attended school in Stronghurst, Ill., and graduated from Stronghurst High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He workedas a precision grinder for 31 years at Caterpillar Company in Peoria, Ill.
He was of the Methodist faith. He loved to read and was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He loved to travel and enjoyed card and board games. In 1940s he was the New Jersey State Checker Champion.
Survivors include two sons, Terry E. Avery of Gladstone, Ill., and Mike Avery of Peoria, Ill.; one daughter, Pat Rankin of Media, Ill.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Cleo Avery of Oregon; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral for Mr. Avery will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Turnbull Funeral Home, with the Revs. Arla Morse and James Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood, Ill.
A memorial has been established to nurses at Extended Care Unit of Community Memorial hospital.
