F. YOUNG, GENEALOGIST AND AUTHOR
The day of her funeral, workers at the National Archives branch in Denver signed in Florence Edna Nelson Young, then reserved the genealogist's spot at the microfilm machine for three hours.

They will put a memorial plaque on the machine for Young, who died June 4 at age 72 after a stroke.

The Denver woman did genealogical research for thousands of families as part of her business, the Western Heraldry Organization. She wrote three books on counties in Kentucky.

She was so intrigued by the work that she volunteered at least one day a week at the archives for years.

"She started doing it because she was living in Salt Lake City and there wasn't much else to do," said her daughter, Cindy Carpenter of Lakewood. ''The more she did it, the more people asked her about it. The more people asked her about it, the more she realized there was really an opportunity to start a service."

Carpenter said she picked up her mother's mail the day after the funeral, and there were 15 letters requesting information.

Young, who was born in Colorado Springs, is survived by her husband of 54 years, Virgil Young, a son, Jerry Young, Carpenter of Lakewood and daughter Sharon Strunk of Longmont.

Graveside services were Thursday at Arvada Cemetery.

Contributions should go to the National Archives Gift Fund, P.O. Box 25307, Denver 80225.
