Elizabeth T. Tynan 1909 - 2009 ARLINGTON, VT
Elizabeth T. Tynan passed away peacefully on March 30, 2009, after a brief illness. Betty or "Miss Tynan" as she was more familiarly known by her charges, was born July 6, 1909, to Margaret Lyons and James Tynan in the farmhouse that still stands on VT RT 7 North in Arlington. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Arlington Memorial High School in the class of 1928. Betty went on to receive her RN degree from St. Mary's Hospital in Troy, N.Y. Her nursing career included private duty and operating room duty in both Troy, and Bennington's Putnam Memorial Hospital where she was an operating room nurse for nine years. For many years, Betty was instrumental in running the Well Baby Clinic, the Crippled Children's Clinic and the area Blood Banks. She worked for the Arlington Nursing Association as Community Health/Public Health Nurse from 1948 until her retirement in 1976 and was also the much beloved "school nurse". Betty was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary's Church, a member of the Sodality, and a member of the Catholic Daughters Court of St. Rita, Manchester, Vt.
Betty's passions were first and foremost - her love and care for her family especially all her nieces, and nephews, her care for the people in the communities the she served, and for her church. Betty was an avid gardener, furniture refinisher, seamstress, reader of books, and her cooking specialties were reknown. She enjoyed long walks, cross country skiing, trips to the beach, and occasional swims in the Battenkill. Betty, along with her sister, was a world traveler exploring her Irish roots, traveling to Europe, Canada, the Bahamas, and around the U.S.
Betty was predeceased by her parents; Margaret Lyons and James W. Tynan, by her brothers Joseph and John, and by her three sisters, Mary, Margaret, and Roseann. Betty leaves 12 nieces and nephews; Mary Margaret, Roseanna, and Helen Henning, Christopher, Jim, Tom, Martin, and Mark Langlois and their spouses, and Maria Langlois Yamasaki, Elizabeth Langlois Lorenz, Frances Langlois, and Vera Langlois Rosa. She leaves 22 great-nieces and great-nephews and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated on Saturday April 4, at Noon at St. Margaret Mary's Church in Arlington. Interment will follow in the family St. Columban's Cemetery in Arlington, VT. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arlington Nursing Association Scholarship Fund through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
