James Henry Owens was born October 3, 1832 in Habersham County, Georgia to John and Martha Talbot Owens. By January 1860, James' family was living in Gonzalez County, Texas where James raised cattle, and by 1861, they were living in Tarrant County, Texas. When the Civil War broke out, James enlisted in the Confederate States Army on February 25, 1862 in Dallas, Texas and was assigned to Company C, 15th Regiment, Texas Cavalry. He was captured in the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Arkansas Post and sent to Camp Douglas, which at the time was outside of Chicago, Illinois.
