L.H. Bix by and wife are probably the oldest residents in the Lordsburg neighborhood, says the Pomona Review. Mr Bixby came and settled here in 1885, and in 1886 he built the large residence (now known {in 1913} as the Witmer place) Just north and opposite the La Verne schoolhouse. Mr Bixby and a syndicate of Pasadena men laid out the townsite of La Verne in 1896 and gave its name. That syndicate built the La Verne hotel, which is now the David and Margaret Home. (In 1913 the David and Margaret home was an orphanage. In 2006 it is a home for troubled teen girls) Mr Bixby says that as late as 1897, land was bought along Foothill Boulevard in La Verne for $150 an acre, and that same land, which is covered with the finest orange groves on earth now sells at $3000 an acre (in 1913).
