"Abel J. Deforest, a highly respected citizen of West Laurens, died early Thursday, May 18th at the home of his son, Lafayette Deforest of Hartwick. Mr. Deforest was born in Unadilla in 1841 and at the age of 14 years he moved to West Laurens and lived there until last fall, when he came with his wife to spend the winter at the son's home. In December, 1871, he was married to Freelove Nichols of Laurens, who, together with her two sons, Clifford of Hyde Park and the one above mentioned, and one daughter, Mrs. Mae Eldred of Laurens, survive him; also two brothers, Edmond of Unadilla and James of Schenectady; two sisters, Mrs. Julianne Matteson of West Oneonta and Mrs. Ursula McMinn of Butts Corners; and 13 grandchildren. The funeral services, which were private were held Saturday at 2 o'clock and Rev. C. M. Adams of the Methodist Episcopal church officiated. Burial in the Hartwick cemetery."
