Born March 8, 1926 in Orofino, Idaho to Mel and Dessie Mulvaney Beard, Franklin Lawrence Beard passed from this life to the next May 14, 2019. Frank’s family moved to the Status, Washington area in 1927, where he lived until 1943, at the age of 17 when he joined the United States Navy serving his country in the Pacific theater during World War II. He saw action in Guam and Iwo Jima on board the USS Annoy. He was injured by Japanese artillery fire while supplying combat troops and removing wounded soldiers from Iwo Jima. He said one of his proudest moments in life was to have witnessed the American flag raised on Iwo Jima. After the war he was honorably discharged and returned to Satus, graduating from Toppenish high school.
Frank worked various jobs in the lower Yakima Valley until 1959 when he began a career in the thoroughbred horse racing industry. He worked 13 years for the Washington Horse Racing Commission and was self-employed as an owner trainer of thoroughbreds and a Jockey Agent for the better part of 40 years. He was licensed by the WHRC as a steward, patrol judge, racing secretary, jockey agent, owner, trainer, starter, and assistant starter.
Franklin L. Beard married Barbara Greenside Beard February 22, 1975 who he said was the love of his life. They own several good racehorses that ran in the northwest and Canada. The mare, Blooming Rose, was one of their favorites. Frank was an avid fisherman spending many happy adventures at numerous lakes and rivers in the Northwest.
Frank was very active with veteran organizations and as commander of the Yakima VFW post 379 he was selected as the first all American Commander for Yakima VFW post 379. Frank was also a member of the military order of the Cootie. Membership in the MOC is recognition of outstanding service to the VFW and its programs. He was the current commander of the Yakima disabled American Veterans and a member of the Yakima Warriors. June 3, 2015 he was honored with the inland Northwest honor flight to Washington DC in recognition for his service in World War II. Frank also served as the grand marshal for the Yakima annual Veterans Day parade November 11, 2017 in Yakima, Washington.
Franklin Lawrence Beard is survived by his daughter Marlee Beard Price and husband Alan, son Melvin Beard DVM and his wife Lisa Croxall, granddaughter Meredith Price Levitt and her husband Reuven, and great-grandchildren Ethan Levitt and Naomi Levitt. He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Dessie Beard, brothers Richard Beard and Archie Beard sisters Gureta Beard-Hart and Dessi Beard-Jones.
