Born March 8, 1926 in Orofino, Idaho to Mel and Dessie Mulvaney Beard, Franklin Lawrence Beard passed from this life to the next May 14, 2019. Frank’s family moved to the Status, Washington area in 1927, where he lived until 1943, at the age of 17 when he joined the United States Navy serving his country in the Pacific theater during World War II. He saw action in Guam and Iwo Jima on board the USS Annoy. He was injured by Japanese artillery fire while supplying combat troops and removing wounded soldiers from Iwo Jima. He said one of his proudest moments in life was to have witnessed the American flag raised on Iwo Jima. After the war he was honorably discharged and returned to Satus, graduating from Toppenish high school.

Frank worked various jobs in the lower Yakima Valley until 1959 when he began a career in the thoroughbred horse racing industry. He worked 13 years for the Washington Horse Racing Commission and was self-employed as an owner trainer of thoroughbreds and a Jockey Agent for the better part of 40 years. Franklin L. Beard married Barbara Greenside Beard February 22, 1975 who he said was the love of his life. They own several good racehorses that ran in the northwest and Canada. The mare, Blooming Rose, was one of their favorites. Frank was an avid fisherman spending many happy adventures at numerous lakes and rivers in the Northwest.
