She married her beloved husband, John Mapes, on August 15, 1948, in Bedford, Indiana. He preceded her in death.
Following her graduation from Bedford High School in 1942, Hazel enrolled in Indiana State Teachers College where she graduated in 1947.
Hazel had attended St. Andrew Episcopal Church since 1955 and was a member of St. Anne’s Guild and the Vestry. She was also a member of Tri Kappa, Study Club and the PEO Sisterhood.
Hazel is survived by her children, Cindy Mapes, John (Sandy) Mapes, Jeff (Laurie) Mapes, and 4 Grandchildren.
Her parents, and her brother, Claude Aubrey Akins, also preceded her in death.
A Requiem Mass will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, Kokomo, with Rev. Fr. Richard Lightsey and Rev. Fr. Ted Neidlinger officiating. Inurnment will follow the service in the church columbarium.
