Wheatland, Ind., Mch. 4--"Aunt" Sarah Steen who died at her home in Wheatland Feb. 28th, '99 of pneumonia fever, was 74 years, 9 months, and 24 days old.
She belonged to one of the oldest families in this section of the country and was the youngest of a family of eleven children, seven girls and four boys, five of whom survive her.
Her maiden name was Sarah Steffy and her father was John Steffy, who married Elizabeth Killinger in 1799 in Wyth Co. Va. All of the eleven children were born at the old Virginia homestead in Wythe Co. Va. In 1832 Mr. Steffy moved to Knox Co. with his large family, and settled on a farm near Bruceville. All of the children married except Christina, familiarly known as "Aunt Crissy."
Sarah, the subject of this sketch, was married to Richard E. Steen April 11, 1852. They lived on their farm one fourth mile west of Wheatland until his death, which occurred Nov. 27, 1877. The two infant daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. C. White being left homeless by the death of their parents, "Uncle DIck" and "Aunt Sarah" took tbem to their home, and cared for them as tenderly as if they were their own children. These two girls lived with their uncle and aunt until they were married. Both are still living, Mrs. India Green and Mrs. Lizzie E. Stevens.
All of Aunt Sarah's brothers and sisters outlived the allotted three score years and ten. Aunt Katy Pickel died in May '98 at the advanced age of 96. One brother, John Steffy, 87 years old lives at Birds, III. Another brother Henry B. Steffy, 78 years old lives in Kansas.
For the past sixteen years Aunt Mina Katron has made her home with Aunt Sarah. She is now 91 years old. Over a year ago another sister Aunt Crissy Steffy 89 years old came to make her home with her. Aunt Sarah lovingly cared for these aged sisters, and they most deeply feel her death.
Aunt Sarah united with the Presbyterian church under Rev. Hawley at Bruceville, when she was about 16 years old. She was a faithful member until the time of her death, contributing in many ways to the support of the church, and also helped a nephew to get an education for, the Presbyterian ministry.
The funeral was preached from the Presbyterian church at Wheatland Thursday at 10 a.m. by Rev. John Logan Marquis pastor of Grace Presbyterian church, Evansville, Ind., assisted by her nephew, Rev. Walter S. Green, assistant to Rev. Marquis.
Rev. Marquis preached a very impressive sermon from the text found in 1 Cor. 13:13. She was laid to rest in the little cemetery one-half mile west of Wheatland. There, by the side of her husband, she will quietly sleep until the voice of the risen Christ shall speak the eternal resurrection. We find comfort in this promise "Them that sleep in Jesus shall God bring with him, and over such the second death hath no power."
A NEPHEW."
