John was the son of Earl Klein and Velma Whalin. About 1956 he married Vera Moss and they had two daughters, Catherine and Cynthia. They divorced in the 1960's and he later married Maria Georgoulakis. He was retired from the AFL-CIO. John died at the age of 76.
