born to Robert Messenger & Agnes Nancy Aitchison. My grandfather grew up in Waitsburg, WA and attended the Waitsburg Academy where his father was a professor. In Chicago Leigh took a course in lead work and joint wiping (plumbing skill considered necessary at that time) in the Coyne National Trade School. Went back West in August of 1910 and landed in Tekoa, WA., where I ran my own shop for 3 years. Went to Eureka, Montana, and looked over a prospective location Oct., 1912, and, after closing things out in Tekoa that winter, moved to Eureka in Feb. 1913. Married Alice Mariette Robinson on Feb 16th, 1922, at Eureka. In 1924 Leigh & Alice & Don (my father) moved to Eugene, Oregon, where I went to work as a journeyman plumber in April. Worked there till the following March, 1926, when we moved again to Sandpoint, Idaho, where I bought out (on credit) a plumbing shop from Chas. La Mont. After several years in the shop on First Avenue in Sandpoint, Dad moved it to Fifth Avenue across from the Farmers Coop Creamery, and during the depression of 1929 34 moved his equipment to the garage at home. Soon after the U.S. entered the war in Dec 1941, or before he started working in Spokane, first on the Geiger field and naval supply depot projects and then for a Spokane, coming home on weekends usually. He was an active member of the Masonic lodge, once serving (1926) as Master. He was also a member of the Eagles lodge.
