Miss Ollie Mae Byers was a wonderful lady, and I remember her rather well from the times we visited relatives in "The Valley." Although she'd never married, she did not lack for a loving family, friends and church fellowship.

Her surviving brother in 1997 was Carl H. Byers, and her suriving half-brother in 1997 was Russell W. Byers. Her surviving half-sister in 1997 was Mary Byers Owens. All are now deceased (2009 - Russell died this past winter of 2009.)

Ollie Mae and my mother, Evalena Croushorn Heflin, were good friends all their lives. My mother had gone to live with her half-sister, Sadie Byers who was Ollie Mae's step-mother, following the death of her (Evalena's) mother in the early 1920s. However, after a year or two, my grandfather brought my mother back to live with the family at Catlett, Virginia, which included her father and three older brothers.

Ollie Mae was a cordial woman who always seemed to me to be very much a fine lady. Today it's not so easy to find women who are old-style ladies.
