Erlon Harold “Ike” Knight died peacefully at home on Jan. 9, 2019, with his loyal French bulldog Spike, and family by his side.

Ike was born in Portland, Maine, on July 20, 1934, the first child of Evelyn (Hawkes) and Philip Knight.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elsa Anita (Stoehr) Knight, of 55 years in January 2011.

He grew up on farms in Maine (Portland, Westbrook and White Rock). He graduated from Westbrook High School, where he was a standout athlete in football, baseball and track.

He joined the Navy in May 1953. After basic training, he went to sonar school graduating in 1954. He was aboard the SS Harkness. He extended his Navy years to go to submarine school, then was aboard the SS Blenny. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in May 1958.

He went to work at Kennedy Airport for United Airlines, then BOAC Airline as airplane mechanic. During this time he became a father. With layoffs at BOAC, he moved his wife and two children to Ashford, Conn., and commuted to Hartford to work at Pratt & Whitney. His third child was born during this time.

In 1970, he began work at Public Service of New Hampshire, maintaining the electricity producing plants in Tamworth and Swans Falls dam in Fryeburg, Maine.

In 1981, he transferred down to Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant working on the nonnuclear side maintaining the buildings and infrastructure of the plant. Leaving Public Service in 1987, he worked for Ingersol Rand, Process Engineering and Exeter Housing until he retired.

In 1999, he and Elsa returned to Conway to be closer to family. He enjoyed living next door to his son and his wife, sharing tools and tractors as they worked on their homes and “shops.”

His daughter and her husband, loved having him involved in his grandchildren’s lives. His granddaughter Jesse predeceased him in 1994. He enjoyed watching his grandson play football and basketball, often sharing stories of his high school games. He frequently was seen in the Kennett basketball stands watching his granddaughter’s team. He followed her games in soccer and softball as well.

Another daughter moved to Kentucky with her husband and their two children, but remained close with visits to Kentucky and long phone conversations. His great-granddaughter brought him many smiles and laughter.

His family will bury him alongside his wife in the Sapling Hill Cemetery in White Rock, Maine.
