Ella was one of 12 children born to John and Jessie McKenzie. She never married but had many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Her youngest brother died in 1996- on his 98th birthday.
Ella moved in with my grandmother ( LuLu Mae Payne Austin) sometime after my grandfather died. Ella was my 2nd grandmother and a sweet, pure soul.
After my grandmother died, Ella was terrified we would "throw her out" of grandmas' house as she wasn't really family.. but to all of us, she was. My uncle went to see her every day on his way home from work, just like he had done when grandma was alive. Ella had no family close by so she was buried close to LuLu. They spent their earthly life close, why not rest forever close as well :-)
According to my uncle, I heard she had a brief, secret romance with LuLus' brother, Guy Payne. I was told if any one mentioned his name, Ella would smile, blush and look away. I do not know why it was a secret or why it never progressed but I suspect some one broke it up. I like to think they're together now. I loved Miss Ella very much.
