When Hermann August Ferdinand Behling and his twin brother Wilhelm Friedrich Eduard were born on July 27, 1848 in Muddelmow, Greifenberg, Pomerania, Prussia, their father, Martin Behling, was 28, and their mother, Ernestine Charlotte Louise Krueger, was 30. There were 14 Behling children: Wilhelm Friedrich and Hermann (twins), August, Carl, Wilhelm Carl, Friedrich Wilhelm and Ferdinand Robert (twins), Wilhelm Heinrich, Auguste Rosenau, Wilhelmine Ernestine, Carl Albert and Christine (twins), Bertha Caroline, and Ferdinand Friedrich: 10 boys and 4 girls.

He married Wilhelmina Caroline Rosalina Laabs on December 4, 1872, in Pommern, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. They had seven children in 12 years, all born in Germany: Anna Emilie Auguste Laabs Behling (1872-1935), Bertha Laabs (1875-1954), Augusta Armstrong (1876-1962), Albertina "Tina" Behling (1878-1964), Robert Ferdinand Behling (1881-1964), August William Behling (1883-1967) and Emma Goetzelman (1885-1968).
