SIOUX CITY - Gene Paxton Scott, 87, of Danville, Ark., formerly of Sioux City, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 18, 2009, with many family members at his side.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at JoGene Ranch, 28137 State Highway 80, in Danville.

Gene was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Schleswig, Iowa, to William Dell Scott and Mary Ann Scott. He graduated from Schleswig High School and attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the 1941 Iowa Golden Gloves boxing champion in the 160-pound division and was nick-named Lefty.

In New Burn, N.C., on March 24, 1944, he married Joyce Annette Roadman. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a first lieutenant and flew the FU4 Corsair during World War II as a fighter pilot from 1942 to 1947. During his tour of duty, he traveled to the South Pacific, Japan, Guam, Midway, Okinawa and China. The couple made their home in Sioux City, where they raised their seven children. He worked as a Realtor at Mansfield Sandman until he retired in 1979 and moved to their ranch in Danville, Ark.

Besides loving his family, he had a passion for airplanes, horses and serving others. He was a faithful member of St. John's Catholic Church in Russellville, Ark. He also was a friend of Bill W.

He is survived by his seven children; 13 grandchildren; and 14 beautiful great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother; three sisters; and a grandson.
