Barbara Appleton Burgess, 77, of Fort Payne, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019. She was a lifelong resident of Fort Payne, graduating from Fort Payne High School and later Jacksonville State University. Barbara retired after teaching Business Education for 30 years. Following retirement, she was a rural mail carrier for 8 years, before joining the staff of Northeast Alabama Mental Health Association, where she was still employed. In addition to her careers, she was a longtime volunteer at the Little River Canyon Center. Barbara was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Barbara loved flowers and plants and animals, but her greatest joy was being Granny to her precious grandchildren whom she adored.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Beasley and Rev. David McMillen officiating. Burial will follow in Fischer Cemetery. The family will receive friends
Sunday from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. hour of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dekalb County Animal Adoption Center, 2601 Jordan Road SW, Fort Payne, AL 35968 or Friends of Little River National Preserve, 4322 Little River Trail NE, Suite 100, Fort Payne, AL 35967.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Cheryl and son-in-law, Dr. John Odle and their children, Charles and Katherine; her mother, Etta Woodall; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Katy Woodall; nieces Suzanne Woodall and Kristi Woodall; nephews Rob Woodall and Brett (Amanda) Woodall and several great nieces and nephews.
